An Award-Winning Method

2015, the Diocese's Authorization

That year, the Diocese of Rouen granted a rare authorization: to approach the material of the monument and extract the invisible from it. Alongside the University of Rouen, the campaign unfolded in the heart of the cathedral, from the nave to the crypt. Air, stone, incense: everything was patiently collected.

The Invisible Mapped

Through gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, all the olfactory molecules of the cathedral were identified, measured, and mapped. Among them, limonene, deposited by incense accumulated on the walls over the centuries, and found even in the crypt. Molecule after molecule, the mapping was completed, and the soul of the place took shape.

From Reality to Art

Olfactive ID starts from reality. This is where the uniqueness of the approach lies: starting from the cathedral itself rather than from imagination. Reality becomes a chosen constraint, and from this constraint arises the freedom of the work. The perfumer composes as closely as possible to the presence of the place, chooses their raw materials to translate its living matter, and signs an artistic interpretation. The perfume remains an olfactory work in its own right.
